The Revenue Manager's Most Underrated Skill: Asking the Right Questions

Data tells you what happened. The people on your team tell you why.

Revenue management is often treated as a numbers discipline. But the most commercially effective revenue managers are also skilled at extracting qualitative intelligence from the teams around them — front desk, reservations, sales, F&B, and housekeeping. A front desk agent knows which guests are asking about upgrade options.

A reservations agent knows which corporate accounts have been calling about rates. The sales team knows which group leads are live. None of this intelligence lives in the PMS.

Getting it requires a structured meeting cadence, the right questions, and a culture where operational teams understand that their observations have revenue value. The revenue manager who combines quantitative analysis with qualitative team intelligence makes better decisions than the one who relies on data alone.
