Segment Mix Management: Why How You Fill Matters as Much as Whether You Fill
Full is not the goal. Full at the right rate, from the right channels, with the right cost of acquisition — that's the goal.

Segment mix management is the discipline of actively shaping who books your hotel, not just how many. A hotel that hits 90% occupancy primarily through OTA leisure transient at a discounted rate is in a fundamentally different financial position than one at 82% with a strong corporate base and healthy direct contribution.
The mix determines net revenue, cost of acquisition, and the quality of repeat business. Managing segment mix means setting channel priorities, deploying inventory strategically, and resisting the temptation to fill early at low rates when better business is still in the booking window.
It also means understanding the interaction effects: a night with strong group on-books may not need the same OTA exposure as a night that's running soft.
