OTA Dependency: When Your Biggest Distribution Partner Becomes Your Biggest Risk
Every percentage point of OTA mix is a percentage point of margin you're paying someone else to generate demand you could be generating yourself.

OTA dependency is one of the most common and most costly structural problems in hotel distribution. Hotels that allow OTA contribution to creep above 50% of their room revenue become increasingly vulnerable to commission rate changes, ranking algorithm shifts, and the gradual erosion of direct channel investment.
Monitoring OTA dependency means tracking OTA contribution as a percentage of total revenue — not just in volume, but relative to direct, GDS, and wholesale — and setting thresholds beyond which the distribution mix is considered commercially unsustainable. The goal is not to eliminate OTA presence, but to ensure it is a deliberate component of your channel strategy, not a default.
